During this unit, each day we were given prompts. And we had to create a drawing based on the prompt given that day. The first day we had to draw nuts and bolts, the second day it was things with an on/off switch, the third day was industrial, the fourth day was things that turn, and the fifth day was nature. And for the final prompt we had to choose two or more prompts and combine them into one work of art. And I chose to create a lightbulb that had an image of nature in it, with tree roots coming out of the bottom. During this lesson I created original art.

In this unit we have been learning about Wayne Thiebaud and the way he creates his art pieces. Wayne Thiebaud mainly creates desserts like cakes, cupcakes, pieces of cakes and gum ball machines. But I chose to recreate a sundae. I developed skill by trying to draw using a style that I have never used before. And I created original art by using my own colors and with different shading.
Over the past week we have been working on an art piece that is based off the work of Trompe L’oeil. L’oeil takes objects and draws them very realistically. In my art piece, I took objects from around the room and tried to replicate them. I took a risk because i have never drew something that had multiple objects in it and make it realistic. And I created an original art piece because no one chose the same objects and no one drew the objects the same way as I did.
During this unit, we focused on embroidery. First, we watched a video about Faith Ringgold, who is an artist best known for her narrative quilts. Then we started to create our own samplers. We put a piece of cloth between the hoop. Then we put the embroidery floss through the needle and started embroidering! During this lesson I developed skill because I learned the 8 basic stitches and created original art.
In this unit we focused on carving and printing. We started out with the EZ carve to get the hang of carving. We used a carving tool to carve the design that we wanted to print. Each carving tool has a number on it that says what size it was. One is the smallest and six is the biggest. When the carving is finished, you then use a brayer with ink to get the ink onto the carving. After we got the hang of using the EZ carve, we then moved onto carving with linoleum. It is much harder to carve, so to make it easier, we used an iron to soften it up. During this lesson i had learned how to properly carve stamps with EZ carve and linoleum. I liked how i was able to create original art by creating my own carvings/stamps.
Throughout this November we have been doing a pottery unit. The pieces I made this nit are my favorite so far. There are 5 clay/pottery stages. The first stage is when it is wet clay. Which is the most workable. The next stage is when it is leather hard. In this stage you can not bend but you can attach with score and slip. Then it becomes bone dry. The fourth step is after it is bisque and is no longer clay. The last step is when it is glazed. It is really fun to use the clay but there are some rules. The first rule is that soft clay cannot be attached to hard clay. The next rule is that pieces of clay must be scored with a needle (or brush) and painted with slip to be 'glued' together. The next rule is that the clay must not be thicker than one inch. The fourth rule is that unnatural bending will result in cracks when drying. The next rule is that uncovered clay is drying clay. So keep it covered. And the sixth and final rule was that clay shrinks as it dries. During this unit, I learned different skills on how to sculpt clay and I created original art.

-I smell the pine scent coming from the pine trees. -I need there to be a reflection of the clouds in the water. -I wonder what the person at the edge of the lake is doing. -I feel calmness coming from the painting. -I want the person at the edge of the lake to be doing something more noticeable. Dear Ella, I am writing to you from Landscape with a Lake by Washington Allston. The scent of pine trees is really strong here. And the water looks really still but I know there is a lot of activity going on under it with all the water life. There is a vast cliff across the lake, I wonder what it would be like to jump off it into the water. I will send you another postcard when I get to my next destination. From, Hailey A new technique that I learned during the time that we painted was that I learned how to get a watery look for the water in the picture. I got it by adding a little more water to the watercolor paint and brushed it onto the paper. Before the paint dries I used a dry paint brush to spread the color more and it created an ombre effect. While I was working on my project, I used ink the get the shaded spots. But I faced a challenge because I got two ink spots where I didn't need it. So instead of trying to paint over them I added wings to the sides of them so they looked like birds. I devolped many skills during the how to use pen and ink bootcamp. By learning about the Book of Kells I expanded my global awareness of art. I created my own original art when I designed my own illuminated letter. I also collaborated and reflected on other peoples works during our formal and informal critiques. Blind contour drawing is important in learning how to draw because it teaches you to focus on what you are drawing. The definition of drawing is taking what you see in the 3D world & flattening it onto the picture plane. My thought process for when I was drawing my hand wrinkles was that I wanted to get the more noticeable ones darker and the less noticeable ones lighter. |
